Colorado Springs: The City
Colorado Springs is the largest city, in terms of size, in Colorado and the most populous city of El Paso County. It’s situated on Fountain Creek and is located 60 miles south of Denver and approximately 45 miles north of Pueblo.
At 6,035 feet, the city is over 1 mile above sea level and is situated near the base of Pike’s Peak mountain, which stands over 14,000 feet!
The city has a population of more than 465,000 with a metro population of more than 710,000 raking it as the 2nd most populated city in Colorado.
Colorado Springs has many features of a modern urban area, such as parks, bike trails, and urban open-area spaces, which are great when you consider we have an average of 243 sunny days per year!
Colorado Springs has a semi-arid climate and dry weather generally prevails, but brief afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially in July and August when the city receives the majority of its annual rainfall.
Winters range from mild to moderately cold, with December, the coldest month, averaging 31 degrees. Snowfall is usually moderate and only remains on the ground for a short time because of all the direct sun! March is our snowiest month, both by total number of inches and number of days with snowfall. Summers are warm, with July, the warmest month, averaging around 71 degrees. Due to our high elevation and arid climate, nights are relatively cool and rarely above 70 degrees.
